Flexor Synergy Pattern

Flexion synergy patterns after stroke involve three movements: External rotation of the shoulder Flexion of the elbow Supination of the forearm In other words, whenever you try to move your affected arm, your shoulder will raise, your elbow will contract, and your wrist will turn until your palm faces up. Flexor synergy, otherwise known as spasticity, refers to the muscle "drawing" or "pulling in", in turn making the muscle in a limb feel stiff, tight, or immovable. The most common areas affected by flexor synergy are elbow flexion paired with shoulder internal rotation, forearm supination, and grasp.

The first, the flexor synergy, includes the external rotation of the shoulder, flexion of the elbow, and supination of the forearm. The second, the extensor synergy, includes internal rotation of the shoulder with elbow extension and pronation of the forearm.

Flexor movement or tone may be elicited in involved arm when the patient attempts to flex the leg or leg flexion is resisted. This reaction is called homolateral synkinesis. Souque's Phenomenon - Increased tone of involved arm above horizontal evokes an extension and abduction of fingers. References ↑ Scott AD.

Synergistic movement (also known as synergy) occurs when a stroke affects the part of the brain that controls muscle movement. When your brain cannot correctly send signals to move your muscles, motor difficulties like synergistic movement can occur.

Based on pre-therapy UE flexor synergy scores, participants were categorized into mild (10-12 points), moderate (6-9 points), and severe (0-5 points) impairment classes. Results:In the robotic group, all outcome measures improved after therapy in patients with moderate or severe impairment.

Such flexion movement may induce dorsiflexion of the ankle (flexor synergy of the ankle). There is a growing body of evidence that altered reflex pathways may contribute to the abnormal patterns of activation, or muscle synergy.

Flexion synergy patterns include scapular retraction, shoulder abduction and external rotation, elbow flexion, forearm supination, and wrist and finger flexion in the upper extremity; and hip flexion, abduction and external rotation, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion in the lower extremity.

Obligatory synergy patterns are observed when a patient tries to make a minimal voluntary movement, or as a result of stimulated reflexes. The flexion synergy for the upper extremity includes scapular retraction and elevation, shoulder abduction and external rotation, elbow flexion, forearm supination, and wrist and finger flexion.

Because the flexion synergy influences the amount of elbow flexor muscle activation present in the paretic limb during tasks requiring shoulder abduction loading, it was hypothesized that stretch reflexes may be modulated by expression of this abnormal muscle coactivation pattern.. This graded expression pattern therefore makes it more.

Their lower limb muscle function and walking performance will be assessed at baseline (2 to 3 times within the 2 weeks prior to starting the training), at the end of training, and 4 weeks later. Each subject will perform biking exercises under supervision, 2-3 times per week for 4 weeks (30 minutes each). The bike pedals are moving backward at.
