Diamond-patterned snakes may appear as if they have an "x"-shaped criss-cross pattern down their back where the outlines of the diamonds intersect. The pattern on blotched or reticulated snakes that looks similar to diamonds is actually patches of color that have a rough diamond shape, but with rounded corners and slightly distorted edges. Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakes have diagonal lines on their heads. Diagonal lines run from the eyes to the jaws on the triangular head of the Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake. In the present study we investigated the effect of triangular and diamond-shaped patterns in snake skins on the ERP correlates of visual processing in humans. In the first experiment, we employed pictures of snakes displaying either triangular/diamond-shaped patterns or no particular pattern on their skins, and pictures of frogs as control.

The Western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) is a heavy bodied snake with a triangular shaped head. There are two dark diagonal lines on each side of its face running from the eyes to its jaws. It has dark diamond-shaped patterns along is back. This species is easily identified by the diamond-shaped pattern along its back (the source of its common name), as well as the distinctive black band that covers its eyes, outlined by two pale lines. It has vertical, cat-like pupils, and there is a large pit between the nostril and the eye on each side of its face.
